He had a big presence, but was reserved.
A deep voice, but always spoke calmly; maintained a quiet disposition, but you could always hear him singing—and if you sat down at the table with him, you’d be lucky enough to hear about the interesting life he lived. From growing up in Queens Village to snow-birding in Hawaii; From jet setting to Puerto Rico on the weekends—while working for Eastern Airlines—to ushering The Beatles through the basement of the Plaza Hotel during their first U.S. visit, while he was an NYPD Officer. He learned Russian while serving in the United States Air Force, was stationed in North Dakota and Japan, put himself through college, trained at the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA and went onto management positions in the city he loved—after he retired as an NYPD lieutenant for two decades. He was engaged in his community and advocated for recreational parks along Long Island—even created an association to support the cause. He also presided over two Yacht clubs, both of which he founded.
While his list of accomplishments are impressive, he’d tell you his family was the best one of all. He was a loving husband to Barbara Walker for 57 years, a proud father of his two children—Kathleen and Kevin, a new great-grandfather to my son, and more than “just a grandfather” to me, my brother, and our 3 younger cousins. Bruce Piel was everything and more — and we will make sure to share his storied life for generations to come.

We love both Bruce and Bobbie. We spent a lot of time with them in Hawaii doing many things. They were a big part of our group. He was a big man with an even bigger heart. Bruce especially loved sitting out on his balcony when they were in Hawaii. We can't express how sad we are to lose him. Our hearts and prayers go out to the entire family and especially to Bobbie. Know that we are here for you always Bobbie and wish we could be with you now in your time of sorrow.

Dear Grampy,
I can't believe you're gone. You were the best grandfather I could ask for. From the laughs in the den to the talks during dinner, it was always a good time when you are around. I'll always remember the times when Nanny would tell you that you couldn't eat something, but would take a little bit anyway. I am determined to keep my grades up and determined to continue playing tennis, just for you Gramps. Every time I come off the courts with a win or just playing around for, I will be imagining you sitting right outside the courts watching me play. I know you are at peace right now watching over all of us. Thank you so much for being an amazing grandpa. I miss and love you so much.
Forever with love,
Lauren <3 (Lulu)

I'll miss you most gramps...I'll always be thinking of you when I'm eating something Nanny would tell you you couldn't have and I would always try to sneak you some. Hope you're enjoying all the cake and m&m's you can eat now. Thanks for being my best friend and always cracking jokes with me. Love always, Gracie

Pop, you will surely be missed. You were taken too quickly from us, but now you can be at peace. Thank you for your strength, your kindness, your sense of humor and especially your love. You were a wonderful Son, Husband, Brother, Grandfather , Great Grandfather and DAD! I will miss the many times you, Kathy and I were racing to make the same joke and Mom would laugh. I will miss your warped sense of humor. I will miss the stories of the old neighborhood, the police department, the FBI academy, and just regular life stuff. I will miss fixing those little things around the house that would break (and would annoy you). I will miss complaining about politics, taxes and all the other fun stuff on the news. I will really miss your advice and calmness no matter what the situation, even emergencies (thank you for teaching me that). I may miss all these things, but I promise I will never forget. And if you listen real hard, we can still have all these little chats.
We will all support each other now and make sure Mom is ok. Now is your time to rest and just be at peace.
I love you Pop. xoxo
