Obitiuary

Jeanne M. Leninger (nee Mannion) devoted wife, mother, and grandmother died December 11, 2024. Jeanne was of a vintage that she swore others never to precisely disclose. But we are on solid ground to say she was raised during the Great Depression—an event that always tempered her opinions. She married the love of her life, Jack Leninger, soon after he returned from his service in the Army at the end of WWII. They were happily married for 48 years until Jack’s death in 1997. They settled in Wantagh in 1954 and raised their sons Tommy and Michael and daughter Cathyann in their tidy Wantagh Woods home. It was there that Jeanne met her best friend Bunny Savarese and together they met the challenges and joys of motherhood with faith and loving support. They also shared the bond of the untimely deaths of their sons, John Savarese and Michael Leninger—best friends themselves—who were not only born four months apart but died four months apart. Jeanne was the proud aunt to Judy Rapa and Robert Rotondo, and the Marano girls, Karen, Susan, Geraldine, Janet, and Dolores, for whom she always had a soft spot.

Jeanne was also a loving grandmother to Lorraine (Travis) Carlin, Thomas (Lauren) Leninger, Kathleen (Matt) Gassner, Maureen (Jordan) Crames, and Elizabeth, Jack, and Patrick Boyle. She was also blessed with nine great-grandchildren, James, Clara, and Lucas Carlin, Emily and Abigail Leninger, Logan and Amelia Gassner, and Jaxson and Myles Crames. Of course, Jeanne could not have performed in those roles without the contributions of her daughters-in-law Lorraine Leninger and Susan Leninger, and her only and best son-in-law John Boyle. Jeanne was an active and opinionated, but much loved, mother-in-law. And, finally, any discussion of Jeanne’s life would be incomplete without mention of her love of the beach. For more than 47 years she held court down at Point Lookout where she presided with a watchful eye at her cabana. Once Jeanne declared a “beach day” nothing could keep her from the sand & surf. For the last decade Jeanne was a resident at Maple Point Senior Living in Rockville Centre, where she had many friends and was thankful for the helpful and caring staff.

We take great solace knowing that Jeanne will now be enjoying some celestial beach days with her husband Jack and her handsome and mustached son Michael by her side. Eternal rest grant unto Jeanne, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen!
