I only met Evelyn a few times, but she treated me as if I were one of her own grandchildren. She loved her family so. She loved her friend Nancy, who preceded her in death, and Nancy's family. I came to my friend Donna's for a couple of Christmases, before Donna became a Nonni, and Evelyn would be in the center of the room with her best friend Nancy, smiling and making sure everyone had enough to eat and yelling at Donna that she was drinking the water she was not, in fact, drinking.
Because I did not know Evelyn well, but because I know her daughter Donna, it is not hard to figure out what kind of person Evelyn was. If she was anything like her daughter, Donna, then she was a loving, selfless, funny, passionate, caring, kind soul with a hard of gold (and probably just a little pain in ass). I'm guessing she loved fiercely and took joy in giving to others.
I am sorry to everyone who loved Evelyn for your profound loss. They say grief is the price we pay for love, and those who loved her the most will hurt the most. Hopefully someday the grief will subside a little to make room for the happy memories. In the meantime, look for Evelyn in the smiles of her son and daughter, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren. Think of her whenever you eat a good meal. This is how you keep her alive.
Rest in peace, Nonni. I hope Bell greeted you on the Rainbow Bridge. May your memory be a blessing. I'm glad our paths crossed, however briefly. I'm honored to call your daughter a friend.
