Aunt Alberta was my mom's sister. Growing up, she was the "cool" aunt. Every year at Christmas, we had a tradition of her bringing my sister Edye and I to Hicks. As kids growing up, we loved going to her house and hanging out with her in the backyard swimming pool. She loved the water so much that she'd stay in there longer than all of the kids. "Aunt" as we always called her for short, wanted to be the one that got us Barbie stuff every birthday. Between my sister and I, I think we must've had every possible Barbie thing you could have--townhouse, plane, camper, car...you name it. Aunt got me my first record album. She took me to my first move--"Willie Wonka" and of all things, "Hair"! Some of my most beloved memories of her is playing cards with us--every holiday or anytime the family got together, we played cards. Even if she wasn't there, we would regularly call her to make the call on what a particular rule was if there was a dispute during a game! As we grew up, she and Uncle Ronnie would come down to Florida to visit. And as we had our own kids, she would come down for birthdays, etc. Aunt was a special person--she spent a lot of time with us growing up. She took the time to listen and appreciated us for who we were. She always had a smile on her face and was always ready to have a good time and/or a good laugh. I think we'll all miss her dearly.
