Obituary

KATARZYNA SZMITKO PASFIELD  Katarzyna (Kasia) Pasfield; Born December 10, 1979 in Łomża, Poland. Kasia grew up on her family farm in North East Poland. Even at an early age, she worked hard helping her family on the farm but this did not stop her from excelling in school. Kasia was always an inspiration to her siblings, motivating them to believe in themselves and reach for their goals. She herself was always a top student and she became the first in her family to attend university. She went on to earn a master’s degree from the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn.   In 2003 Kasia came to the United States to continue her education. While attending to her studies, she shared a house with friends in Lindenhurst NY where she would meet and begin dating Joshua Pasfield. Kasia completed a Master’s of Arts Degree in Mathematics at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue, NY and obtained a Teacher’s Certificate from the State of New York. She taught 6th,7th and 8th grade mathematics at Our Lady of Wisdom School in Pt. Jefferson NY. In 2016 she began teaching 9th and 10th graders at Our Lady of Mercy Girls High School in Syosset New York. Here she continued to inspire her students and her colleagues as she taught high school girls algebra and geometry.

Kasia became a US citizen in 2019. However, she was proud of her Polish heritage. She carried on Polish tradition and especially Polish cuisine in her home, maintained close ties with her family in Poland, and insured her children were fluent in the Polish language. She also supported the local the Polish Community on Long Island. From 2012 to 2021 Kasia taught Polish to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders at Zbigniew Herbert Polish Supplementary School in Copiague, NY.  Kasia married Joshua Pasfield on June 16, 2006. Together, they moved into their new home, where they still currently reside, and started a family. She was devoted to her boys Matthew and Ryan. She always gave them her best and encouraged them and expected them to do their best in school, in sports and in their lives. With her family, Kasia was also active in her local Parish of St. Mary’s and shared deeply held beliefs in her Savior Jesus Christ and the importance of church and faith with her family and friends. Most recently the family adopted a puppy, Flash who has become a huge part of their family. Flash immediately became attached to Kasia.

Kasia loved reading, music, long walks, and traditional Polish food. She loved to travel and visit new places but most of all she loved being with her family. She was extremely close to her sister and best friend Gosia Nealon. She took her family to visit her parents and other siblings Tomasz and Mariusz in Poland as often as she could including a trip this past summer.  Tragically, Kasia was taken from us without warning and before we were ready to give her up. It is not enough to say that she will be missed, her absence from us will forever leave an empty place in our hearts. Kasia leaves behind her husband Joshua and sons Matthew and Ryan; her beloved parents Elzbieta and Zdzislaw; her siblings Mariusz, Gosia and Tomasz along with many family and extended family members including uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins. She also leaves behind many students, colleagues and friends who share in this untimely loss. She also leaves behind her Flash who is lost without her.  Kasia, our lives will never be the same without you. Though we are all the better for having you in our lives, we will miss you dearly think of you often and remember you always.
