Awilda was a good friend and colleague. We worked together at MVHS. Awilda was a lovely person with a never ending smile. She was very supportive to both staff and students as evidenced by her caring and hard work. She was intelligent and a team player. As we worked together, we grew together as friends and shared lots of laughs and good times as well as sharing our stories about our families. I will miss her dearly as she is a great loss to me and many others. I know she is in Heaven and will watch over her family and loved ones. Angela Addesso

Awilda was an intelligent, well spoken educational pioneer and leader for children with disabilities and bilingualism. Her generosity knew no bounds. Awilda had a great sense of humor. She made an impact on many lives. She was a great wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Awilda inspired me not only to be the best educator I could, but to be the best person I could be. She was not only my friend and mentor, but she was a big sister to me. She was greatly loved and will be missed immensely. My deepest condolences to Joe, David, Andrew and all the family. May the Lord give you all comfort at this time. My prayers are with you all.

My deepest condolences and I pray God puts his loving arms around your family during this difficult time. I worked with Awilda at Mount Vernon High School. Awilda was a breathe of fresh air at work. I appreciated her bubbly personality, humor and energy. I still have the video of her debut on the show "What would You Do". I have so many fond memories of Awilda and I can still hear her saying my name running behind me :-) She was truly and blessing too many and she will truly be missed.
Peace and Blessings

My mother-in-law had not a mean bone in her body. She was always happy and her laugher was so lively and loud it could fill the biggest room. My mother-in-law was one of the funniest women I know. The things that would come out of her mouth were so funny we can still laugh about it.
Awilda was also a very kind woman. The embodiment of love. She was a fighter, a warrior; a woman who believed in equal rights and always helped the underdog. Her family was everything to her. She always bragged about her sons: Dave & Andrew and her grandchildren: David, Jillian & Mora. Her husband, Joe, was her world. She was gone too soon but we are at peace that she went to be with the Jesus. I love her and I will miss her dearly.

Awilda...
my friend, my colleague, my mentor, my inspiration.
My deepest sympathy and prayers go out to you Joe, David, Andrew and your extended family. You all know better than I how VERY giving, loving, sharing, and caring Awilda was. She demonstrated her love and care for others, she didn't pay lip-service. She inspired and helped many, many aspiring teachers, clinicians, and administrators. She not only helped people professionally, but she also always looked out for her friends. One brutal winter I was home sick with a horrible case of the flu. I felt miserable. It was horribly cold and overcast outside. I thought I had no strength to get out of bed... Then the doorbell rang. I dragged myself to the door. It was a messenger with a HUGE bouquet of flowers and a bright cheery message from Awilda. She then called. Awilda lifted my spirits up that day and I thank God for her because she was always helping others. Thank you Joe for sharing Awilda with us! Joe, David, and Andrew, may our heavenly Father give you the peace that passes all understanding that only he can give through our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ. Awilda will always remain in my heart.
