Obituary Part 1

Dorothy Feulner (1926 – 2021) Dorothy Feulner (née Schmidt) died at midnight on Valentine's Day, 2021, at age 94. Born in Hempstead and a resident of East Meadow since 1951, she grew up with Long Island. She was the beloved wife of the late Richard Feulner (d. 2010), also a Long Island native, and is survived by sons Gary of Dubai, UAE, and Wayne (and wife Leslie) of Knoxville, TN; grandchildren Kelly Broderick of Littleton, CO and Keith Feulner of Seymour, TN; seven great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; about ten nieces and nephews, for a few of whom she became a surrogate mother; and her friend and confidante Evelyn Wolovnick. Dorothy was a loving wife and mother, a scrupulous homemaker, and a woman of many talents. Along the way she was a determined and selfless caregiver to her own father, mother, two sisters and finally her husband. Following Richard's death in 2010, she ran her household and affairs unassisted through her 93rd birthday. Through it all, she never let anybody down. She was a child of the Great Depression, a drum majorette, a wartime sweetheart and a young post-war bride and mother. She loved her school days, remembered her friends and teachers, and even in later years referred on occasion to her childhood poetry books.

Obituary Part 2

She was also a trained bookkeeper and in that capacity and others she was a partner to her husband Richard in his watch repair business for several decades. She was also a watercolor artist, seamstress, decorator, crafts aficionado, and a talented and clever writer. She took special pride in making her own greeting cards for relatives, complete with poems. With her husband and family, she was a frequent hiking visitor to the many parks and wild areas of Long Island and the tri-state area. She was also a competent bowler, surf fisherman and marksman with a .22 rifle. In later years, she recalled with joy her independent travels with Richard in the western U.S., Europe, the Caribbean and the United Arab Emirates. She bore the inevitable discomforts of old age, including a number of late-life medical inconveniences, with patience and fortitude, and without complaint, and she worked hard to overcome them. She was known to the end for her good nature, good humor, good counsel and good company, and she took her final bow with resolution, grace and dignity – her only word of reproach was for the system that forced her to linger in decline at the end – and so she made it easy for those who carry on.
