Obituary Part 1

Edward Joseph McElroy January 29, 1926 – December 22, 2020 Edward “Ed” Joseph McElroy, age 94, died peacefully on December 22, surrounded by loving family members and caretakers. “Pop” will always be remembered for filling his home and his family’s lives with love, laughter, faith, and music. Born in Clones in county Monaghan, Ireland, Ed immigrated to America with his family when he was three years old. He became a citizen in 1935 and proudly enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he bravely served his country during WWII on the USS Tallulah (AO-50). At just 19 years old, he met the love of his life, Nora, with whom he shared five children and the rest of his days. They resided in East Meadow, NY for more than 63 years. Most of all, his family will remember and cherish the unending love and joy shared between Nora and Edward for more than seven decades.

Obituary Part 2

Ed was determined to spend his life providing for his family, and he worked for many years as a doorman in several Manhattan hotels, where he, of course, made immediate best friends with everyone who passed through his doors. But perhaps the thing he loved most outside of his family was music. He could play almost any instrument and had near-perfect pitch. He was a long-time member of St. Raphael’s choir, and a leader of countless living room family singalongs. Ed is predeceased by his loving wife, Nora (George) McElroy, and is survived by their five adoring children: Edward McElroy and wife Sophia (Ferruzzi) McElroy of Moriches, NY; Michael McElroy of East Meadow, NY; Mary McElroy of Blue Point, NY, James McElroy and his wife Donna (Montalbano) McElroy of Commack, NY; and Anne (McElroy) Schmidt and her husband Jim Schmidt of Norfolk, MA. Ed was also a devoted grandfather to 12 loving grandchildren and their families: Nicole and Michael Voelker, Melissa and Rachel McElroy, Edward and Lucy McElroy, Brian and Kim McElroy, Jenni and Steve Bitetto, Nick and Jackie McElroy, Matt McElroy and Christine Garibotto, Grace McElroy, Rose McElroy, Christy Schmidt and Hillary Noble, Kevin Schmidt, and Michael Schmidt. He also leaves behind 10 great grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews. Ed was predeceased by his mother, Ellen (Murray) and father, James, and his five siblings: John (Millie), James “Gerry” (Marsha), Eugene (Alice), Mary (Walter) and Lawrence. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, all services are private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Pronto of Long Island Inc., 128 Pine Aire Drive, Bay Shore, NY 11706.
