I cannot express in any words the shock and sadness I'm feeling. It is so very rare that we meet someone In life that has not only a tremendous affect on ourselves...but on so many other lives. Over the past few years I was fortunate enough to be able to assist Gus with the u23 summer league. We had countless talks about improving, making it better, streamlined. Gus would never settle for "ok". Who else would take time out of his evening to come and watch an old man play with college kids...just to share in a laugh...and to offer a hand full of Motrin. US Soccer and the world that knew him have truly lost...I would never call him "special"...he hated Mourinho. Amazing is more like it. I know he is gone, he will be missed...but he will never ever be forgotten.

Gus you have been very important in our family. The lessons you taught in soccer have carried over and become life lessons. You helped Becky to become the best that she could be (despite her protests sometime!). I loved being your assistant coach for many years. You will always be remembered. Rest easy Gus. You will be missed. Keeping Candy, Dina and EJ in my prayers...

I met Gus through his work with the LISFL. I was a local media member trying to support and promote the league as well as a player for one year in their O-40 Division.
Gus was extremely welcoming and once you were introduced to him, you were immediately a part of the family. I remember the meals at the diner after meetings and games.

Gus was my coach at an impressionable age of 13 and he instilled confidence in me when I needed it most. He believed in me as a player and a leader. I always wanted to work my hardest to make him proud of the player that he saw in me. Gus was kind and demanded the best. As I grew older I would always see Gus at various events and we always had a great laugh together. He is a man of integrity and he always made me feel respected and loved. Thank you for all of the great memories and being one of the best coaches and people I’ve known in this world. May you Rest In Peace.
Love,
-Filippa

Gus, we knew of each other through my time with the Greek Americans at Regional and Nationals, however I really got to know you this past fall through the multiples dinner with you, Candy, David, & Zef on Sunday nights. I was really looking forward to resuming in the spring and beyond but sadly it isn’t to be. You were so welcoming to me and the passion with which you talked about life and the game was infectious, not to mention the many laughs you provided me with your jokes and stories. You will be sorely missed and the soccer community has lost a great person. You have touched many lives for the good and your family can be proud of the legacy that you have left. My thoughts are with your family. Rest In peace my friend.

Gus, you were a mentor for me. For the little time I knew you, you were always there to take care of me. You put soccer back in my life and couldn’t have thanked you enough for all you’ve done for me. I’m saddened not being able to have one more dinner with you at the diner or talk about our favorite sport together but I hope you’re in a better place. I’ll always remember you and pray for you. I hope you Rest In Peace and that you’re an angel above us. You’ve touched so many of us and we’ll always remember the legacy you left for us. God got a good one from us. It is with tremendous sadness that I wish to offer my condolences to the Xikis Family. Gus was taken away from us way too soon. We should celebrate his life and remember all of the great things Gus accomplished and how wonderful his life was. It is sad that Gus’ life came to an end so quickly and I can’t put into words how much I will miss him. I will always remember the great times we spent together at the soccer games, eating together and taking trips together in my car. Even though Gus may be gone, his memory will live in all of us forever. I will cherish your friendship and will never forget you. Rest In Peace my friend.

As I’m finally starting to process the fact that Gus is gone, I’m thinking about how much he had left to do. I’m so thankful that I saw Gus the day before he suffered the aneurysm. We talked for a couple of hours about the things he still wanted to do with his family and in soccer as he moved towards retirement. He still had so much left to give. I can’t help but feel so sad for his family. This is just so hard to accept. Gus loved the photo I uploaded, which I took of him in 2013 I believe.
