Obituary

Lucille Elizabeth Hyland was born in Brooklyn in 1922. Devoted wife to Joe, her husband of 69 years, who passed away December 21, 2013 at the age of 94. Devoted mother to her only child Peter (Kathleen) who passed away on April 8, 2002. Loving grandmother to Joseph (Stacy), Kerry Udell (David), Valerie Decker (Joe) and Kevin (Yliana). Cherished by her 9 great-grandchildren Mckayla, Logan, Kiera, Shannon, Heather, Joseph, Braydon, Olivia and Connor. Lucille worked as a secretary for the special victim’s unit under Queens County District attorney Geraldine Ferraro. She and Joe raised Peter in Middle Village, Queens. In and around 1991, Lucille and Joe moved to Hawley, Pennsylvania where they were dubbed “pioneers” having purchased and resided in one of the first houses built in the brand new Woodloch Springs golfing community. There, they enjoyed more than 20 years of rewarding retirement together. Lucille and Joe’s love was something to aspire to. Vital moment: had Joe not been on break writing a letter to Lucille (his wife of less than 5 months at the time) while stationed aboard the USS Blessman, he may not have survived a bombing and Lucille and Joe’s 14 descendants would never have come to be. Lucille was well-known for her smile, laugh, faith in God, love, and kindness to the people she touched. Lucille exuded elegance, beauty, class and grace. Though her passing leaves a huge hole, we find comfort knowing that she is reunited with the love of her life, Joe and son, Peter. We are all blessed to have shared in her magnificent and bountiful life. Lucille truly was a great wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and she will be missed, dearly.
