Obituary

Jane Elaine (Lada) Serio, a resident of Wantagh, went home to the Lord on Wednesday April 24, 2019. Born and raised in Woodhaven, Queens, NY to J. Edmund Lada and Florence (Mathiesen) Lada, Jane married Dr. Joseph Serio, DDS in 1951. They moved from Woodhaven to West Hempstead, NY in 1957 where they raised their 12 children. Jane was involved in many activities in the family’s parish, St. Thomas the Apostle. She was a member of the liturgy committee, school board, parish council and also a cantor at Sunday Mass. During this time, Jane returned to college and earned a BA in Gerontology from Molloy College in 1980. She spent 20 years working for the Town of Hempstead’s Department of Senior Enrichment as a supervisor of centers and directing the Summer Program at Lido Beach. She and her colleagues provided great service to the senior citizens of Hempstead during these years. She also helped to establish the Elder Studies Program at Molloy College. She moved to Wantagh in 2003, and became a member at St. Frances de Chantal parish. Using her experience and knowledge in gerontology and spiritual direction, she became involved in the parish and served as the Director of the Ministry of Consolation until recently.
