Miss Baumann was my English teacher at Garden Country Day School (Garden), she was my go-to person, my inspiration, my idol and a dear friend. Today, I read of her death in the Vassar Quarterly, where we both attended undergraduate school. Throughout my career, she was there to render counsel and guidance. While a writer/editor, she read and sometimes critiqued my articles. Like her, I then went on to ;pursue law and we briefly unknowingly worked at the same firm, she in NY, me in D.C. Knew her mother and she introduced her then soon-to-be husband, Greg to me, prior to their marriage. We exchanged correspondence for over 40 years. Today, has been a sad one indeed, this is the second death notice for someone near and dear for whom I deeply loved. There are some people who can never be replaced, she is absolutely one of them! Thank-you for every word you made me write and for each day you made my life bright; I shall love you forever, Miss Baumann.

Ellen was the pearl in the center of the luminescent shell of the McPhillips family - itself a work of art.
When I was quite a young woman - was her brother Michael's prom date in 1963 - I was Garden class of "65 - I was so wowed by her. She was the most brilliant, beautiful, kind and loving person. She had long brown hair that she wore flowing down her shoulders and back - fastened by various designer ribbons - a la Alice in Wonderland. I never could grow that hair nor did I have the right hairline but I tried so hard to emulate her. I still own some of the ribbons I bought at Bloomingdales!! She was so stylish and just older enough to dazzle me - and everyone. She was a big brain - and I only fantasized following in her academic footsteps. Her career as an attorney is exemplary - and her dedication and service to Garden unparalleled to anyone but maybe her dear co-runner Michael Rakosi. My Mom Helen Garb served Garden for nearly 40 years. My sister Lydia worked there and met her loving husband John Kontos who also taught at Garden. I choreographed some shows there in my journey to theatrical prowess. jumpstarted by Charlie Millevoi. What a family Garden nurtured!! The Mchillips and the Garbs had a special bond. Ellen and Michael were the first to arrive at my Mom's memorial back in 2014 - warmed my heart more than one could imagine. And my heart warms and aches when I think of you Ellen. We will all miss you and will always love you!

Ellen, you left us way too soon, but your spirit, wit, brilliance and warmth will never be forgotten by those of us who were fortunate enough to call you teacher, colleague and friend. You taught me how to read literature and how to effectively communicate in writing. I cannot write a brief, letter or email without being mindful of and grateful for your long ago comment on an English paper: "Your writing is in danger of becoming verbose." You were an inspiration to so many young women at Garden. The entire Valicenti/ Donovan family sends our deepest sympathy, prayers, and heartfelt empathy to your siblings, nieces and nephews. Rest in peace, dear friend!

Ellen McPhillips Baumann ’59, was a beloved member of the Garden School Community. She and her family were part of the fabric of Garden School. Ellen was not only a graduate of Garden, but also a former faculty member and the former President of the Garden School Board of Trustees. Ellen’s spirit will never leave our halls. Those of us who knew Ellen realize what a spectacular person she was: thoughtful, kind, strong and a deep supporter of Garden. Hers and her family's association with Garden go back more than 75 years. We can only say that we are deeply saddened by her death.

Ellen was a wonderful person, from the time I met her when I was in the 5th grade at Garden, through our last communication a month or so ago. She was kind, gracious, sweet, and smart. A really lovely person. She will be sorely missed but will always be cherished in my memory.
