Obituary

STENGER – Philip F. of Wantagh, NY on June 15, 2018 at the age of 89. He is survived by his wife of 64 years Evelyn. Loving father of Kenneth (Deborah) Stenger, Nancy Stenger (Anthony) and Karen (Robert) Hempel. Proud grandfather of six; Laura (Michael), Kimberly (Joseph), Kathleen (Robert), Robert (Lauren), Kenneth and Kaleigh. Dear brother of Patricia Harris, Mary Desmond, Eileen Haggerty, Robert and the late Raymond. Phil served in the US Army during the Korean Campaign, retiring with an honorable discharge. He had a 60 year career in banking with 45 of those years in Brooklyn, where he was known as the unofficial mayor. Phil gave his time during those years supporting many organizations. He was chairman of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Brooklyn Association. President of the Brooklyn Club and Municipal Club of Brooklyn. Served on the Board of Directors on Angel Guardian Home, Brooklyn Sports Foundation and Helen Keller Services. Also, on St. Francis College, Council of Regents and was conferred an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. Served as treasurer of the Brooklyn Borough Hall Restoration Project. Also served as a member of the Wantagh Fire Department and president of the Wantagh Fire Department Benevolent Organization. Family will receive friends Tuesday, 2-5 pm and 7-9 pm, and Wednesday, 2-5 pm and 7-9 pm, at the Charles J. O’Shea Funeral Home 603 Wantagh Ave. (Exit 28N SS PKWY) Wantagh, NY. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, 10:00 am, at St. Frances de Chantal R.C. Church. Interment to follow at Holy Rood Cemetery. www.osheafuneral.com
