Peter Sloboda, age 93, of Islip, NY was reunited in Heaven with his devoted wife of 64 years, Dorothy K. Sloboda, on April 18, 2018 whom he met on a blind date. Peter was born in Green Point, Brooklyn on October 12, 1924 to John and Dominica Sloboda. He was preceded in death by his loving brother, Walter, and sisters Olga (John) Roecklein and Jean (John) Leschik. He worked as an Architectural Draftsman for 40 years at General Bronze and Craft, before retiring from Mannix Industries in 1990. Peter was the proudest WWII veteran you could ever meet and frequently recalled his 4 months in a foxhole in Normandy. He was awarded many medals for his devoted service, his greatest accomplishment being presented the Legion of Honor medal by the French Consulate in NYC in 2009. He was also recognized for his service with bricks placed in his name at the WW II Museum in New Orleans and the Richard I. Bong Museum in Superior, WI. He loved following horse racing, playing the slots, crossword scratch off lottery tickets and enjoying all the time that he could with his family and friends. Peter was a loving father to Carol (Jason) Laros, Janet Sloboda (Frank Ruisi), Cindy Blanding (Doug Engie), and Peter A. Sloboda (Jennifer Havarty), who he commonly referred to as his “Best Pal. He was welcomed into Heaven by his beloved late grandson, Travis Sloboda, and leaves behind granddaughter Kristin (William) Brooks and great grandson, Nolan, as well as grandson Tyler (Rebecah) Laros. He will also be greatly missed by his nieces and nephews Diane (Brian) Boylan, John Leschik, Mark (Moira) Roecklein, Scott (Nancy) Roecklein, Laura(Chris) Gallagher, Ann Marie Leschik, Michelle Leschik, and lifelong friend Helen Friedman. Services will be held at Albrecht Funeral Home, East Islip, Sat. 4/21 from 2-4 and Sun. 4/22 2-4 and 7-9. Funeral mass will be Mon. 4/23 at 10:45 at St. Mary's Church, East Islip.
