Steve was my best friend since 1982. For 10 years we were very close. I moved away in 1992 and we kept in touch. He's been to Florida to see me. I went to a family wedding with him on the other coast. I haven't been able to reach him for so long.. and now I see why. We had no mutual friends who would have let me know and I didn't know any of the family well enough either. I'm sure if anyone knew who I was, they didn't know how to reach me. I'm so sorry for your loss. Steve was an exceptional man and I loved him. I've scoured the Internet to find out what happened. So far no luck. I can only imagine it was a repercussion of 911. We was having more troubles the last time we talked, aside from the lung issues. I'm so sad.
Updated, I just found an article.

Brothers share a special bond,
Like blood, brotherhood,
It's thicker than water.
Friends may come and go,
And relationships may drift apart,
But brothers are forever.
Though the sun may rise in the east,
And set in the west,
We will still be brothers.
Though the seasons may change,
Spring, summer, fall and winter;
We will still be brothers.
What God has ordained,
No man can change,
Brothers are forever.

I was so sorry to hear that Steve passed. I did not know at the time and would have gone to his wake to pay my respects. He was a nice man and a good neighbor. I had felt very bad about his health deteriorating after 9/11. May he rest in peace.

Dear Friends,
First, we are giving thanks to God for His complete Shalom in and upon our lives, for the safe transition these past weeks for the ushering of my (our)dear Mother, Pearl and my (our)dear brother, Steven, with our Lord Jesus, home to heaven. Steven's prayer to God was that he would not go Home before our Mom and that Mom would witness him healed, here in the land of the living. Thank You Lord Jesus for hearing and answering our prayers, there's no one like You and we love You!
This attachment is a picture of Steven in his FDNY uniform in front of the first dispatched engine company fire truck on 911. Steven lived, without hesitation to serve and save lives of anyone crying out in need. He loved God with a tangible, loving reverence, and resembled God with a continuous, passionate and selfless spirit of generosity to his family, friends and many Ministries of God, SafeHaven, being one of his favorite.
On March 11, 2017(5777), Steven took his first full, fresh breath of Heaven with God, at a Welcome Home party I can only imagine!
Thank you all for your continued faithful, uplifting prayers and friendship, as we grieve, missing "Stevie," our brother, our friend, as well as our Mom, Pearl. We rejoice for them both, PTL!
We truly appreciated you all and remember each of you and your whole families' in our faithful prayers as well.
Shalom blessings with love,
Christine, Norman and our whole Sorger - McFarlane Family

We are sorry to hear of Stevie's passing. We were childhood friends for over 20 years - baseball, fishing, playing that guitar and riding that unicycle are our best memories. Rest in Peace.

A Letter to my brother Steve,
Your work is finished here.
I know the place you are dwelling in because of the times we spent together in prayer.
You gave your heart to the Lord as you received our Jesus as your Lord and Savior.
I want you to know that I'm jealous because I know if you could come back to me you would not,for the joy unspeakable that you are experiencing now and forever in your Glorified body perfect in every way.Steve i will speak of you always as a brother who was a gentle giant but a fierce warrior especially when it came to your family. You are a true viking and no doubt would have been the king of your clan in the ancient days, when vikings roamed the earth. We will meet again some day but not yet my brother.
A Viking Prayer
Lo, There do i see my Father
Lo, There do I see my Mother
My Brothers and my Sisters
Lo, There do i see the line of my
people back to the beginning
Lo, They do call to me
They bid me take my place among
them in the halls of Valhalla
Where the brave shall live forever
Nor shall we morn but rejoice for those that
have died the glorious death

I was promoted to Lt in 1991 and covered (UFO) in Engine 6 on Beekman St., Manhattan and worked with Steve ( fellow Lieutenant). Steve showed me the ropes & responsibilities of a company officer. My Dad (Retired Fire Deputy Chief - Deceased 01/09/2002) wanted me to join the FDNY in the '70s because he knew the caliber of the men on the job. Steve was one of those men. When my father died in 2002 (4 months after 9/11), I was devastated and I didn't quite feel right. When my daughter asked me if I knew Steve Sorger (Info on her I-Phone - I'm a Tech Dinosaur) and when she explained the circumstances, I was devastated. Steve is of the highest caliber and I became a better person for knowing him. Steve is a Guardian Angel to everyone who knew him especially his family.
I also worked with Pat (Excellent LCC) while covering in TL-119 - another class act.
God Bless Steve and his entire family.
Captain Ed Morrissey Div 11 - Retired 2015
