A long lasting champion of heated negotiations and 51 day strikes with the Long Island Railroad, this man alone spear headed and negotiated work rules and wage increases that benefited all union personnel across the board from the late 1960’s up to his own retirement. He formed a coalition of many crafted unions as a force to be reckoned with.
Tony to many was truly a great man. He helped many after retirement and I can attest that he personally helped me when I became deathly ill when I retired. He got things done, he was very kind and he had charisma. A person that will live long in many people’s memory of how his guidance in past negotiations lead to what many people regardless of any union affiliations enjoy today in the working arena of the L.I.R.R. and yes in retirement. Our pensions have his finger prints imbedded in the details. I am truly sorry to hear of his passing, a profound statesman, who stood tall among the very best when it came to fighting for higher wages and improved working conditions for all who worked for the L.I.R.R.
His political clout off the property for those who knew him personally you would be amazed who he often was seen with such as the likes of Nelson Rockefeller and the great transit union head Mike Quill for starters. The list is endless because he was always available to discuss and lend an ear no matter what political arena you were in. May his family and friends and former union brothers know what a terrible loss you have been handed. A man who when you talked with one on one or you stood near his presence, you knew he was the real deal. He will surely will not be forgotten any time soon, he was a big part of the very fabric of the labor Unions and the L.I.R.R. History, he was part of the foundation.
