SERGIO – Alfred, 88 of Wantagh, New York died on Thursday, February 11, 2016 at home.
He was born on April 14, 1928 in Bronx, NY and later moved to Queens with his parents, 2 brothers and sister. After graduating from High School, he enlisted into the United States Air Force and served his country in Okinawa. Concluding his military service, he returned home to work in Schmidt’s metal machine shop company. Learning the trade from the ground up, he wanted to give back and began teaching in Brooklyn Technical High School. Al was a dedicated and beloved teacher who enjoyed an incredible 31 year career teaching.
During the early days of substitute teaching at Tech, he met and fell in love with May Inserra and together were married on February 5, 1955. Through much love, generosity, patience and prayers they worked hard to raise a loving family. Al and May were blessed with five beautiful children and moved to Wantagh Long Island in 1976 where they made many happy and lasting memories living the rest of their 61 years together.
Al enjoyed his retirement years spending time with family, traveling Europe, the states and ballroom dancing with his wife. Al was a long time parishioner of St. William the Abbot Roman Catholic and a member of the Wantagh, Seaford and Our Lady of Lords Senior centers.
The compassion, concern, love, and dedication to family and friends Al showed serve as an inspiration to all who have been a part of his life. He is survived by his incredible and beloved wife May Sergio, daughters Marianne Schwartz (Jeff), Joanne Kusky (Bruce); sons Al Sergio (Iris); John Sergio (Roxana) and Paul Sergio (Wendy). His wife, children, 8 grandchildren, great granddaughter, sister in laws, numerous nieces and nephews and friends will all miss him, his good nature, kindness and laughter so dearly.
Services for family and friends will be Sunday & Monday 2–5 & 7-9:30 pm at Charles J. O’Shea’s Funeral Home, 603 Wantagh Avenue, Wantagh NY 11793. Funeral mass, Tuesday at 10:00 St. William the Abbot Roman Catholic Church, 2000 Jackson Avenue, Seaford NY 11783. Burial, Cemetery of the Holy Rood, 111 Old Country Road, Westbury NY 11590. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Alzheimers Association of Long Island.
