Hugh Markey

Obituary of Hugh A Markey

A gentle thunder rolled from Point Lookout NY early on September 22, 2015 as Hugh Markey's spirit ascended to Heaven. From grace to Grace, Hugh passed his final exam in the Keena home where his close friend from 1990, Conchita, and her husband Patrick, until his passing last year, cared for him. There he found comfort, tranquility and the pure love of the Keena family. Known to many around the globe, as "Uncle Hugo" and Our Lady's Travel Agent, Hugh Markey spent the second half of his life caring for and supporting countless families and friends, religious and lay, from a generous heart and an absolute dedication to the Blessed Mother. Sharing the Spirit of Our Lady, since 1970 Hugh organized and sponsored pilgrimage trips for many thousands to Lourdes and, beginning in 1990, to Fatima, by nuns from more than 14 orders, many orphans and others from around the world. His particular and abiding devotion rested upon the Sacred Heart of Greenwich, Portsmouth and, by collaboration, the Ampleforth pilgrimage. Beginning in 1983, Hugh's ever faithful response to Our Lady led him to a deep devotion to Mother Teresa. For the balance of his life Hugh remained attentive to the needs of the Missionaries of Charity throughout the world, providing millions of Miraculous Medals and millions of Rosaries, always honoring and following the prayerful lead of Mother Teresa. He gratefully returned the favor with service on the Historical Committee supporting the cause of Mother's sainthood. Born January 12, 1923, driven by God-given talent and a penchant for hard work, Hugh excelled at most everything he attempted. A consummate golfer of regional renown, accomplished tennis player and dancer, Hugh was teacher to others who struggled for mere competence. Hugh attended the Portsmouth Priory, to which he remained a devoted supporter his whole life. A graduate of Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, class of 1948, his education was interrupted by World War II and a series of duties for the U.S. Navy, which culminated with the posting of Port Director of Inchon Korea where he trained Army personnel in Port Management. His temporal life included many accomplishments. Having joined his father Francis L. Markey in the firm of R. Markey & Sons, Inc. in 1948, Hugh quickly learned the business and, over the course of nearly forty years, extended the firm's reputation for excellence and reliability. He led the company, and indeed the industry, through many challenges and transformations until his retirement in 1986. Never shy to assume civic responsibilities, Hugh represented Staten Island as Councilman from 1960 to circa 1965 and campaigned on the Conservative ticket of William F. Buckley for Comptroller of New York City. In 1970, Hugh was elected to President for Richmond County Country Club and served as President of the Staten Island Zoological Society. He later shifted his residence to Locust Valley N.Y. and golfing prowess the Piping Rock Club and the National Golf Links of America. He remained a proud member of The Brook until his passing. Ultimately, Hugh Markey realized his many gifts enabled him to live as an extension of Our Lady. He wasted no time, always moving with dispatch and a sense of urgency, with clear conviction that he acted for Her. How telling, for those who knew Uncle Hugo, that in the end he found no need to rush to heaven for he had found his Peace on Earth. Hugh Markey is survived by his sister Joan Markey Steele; his nephews Markey F. Lawson, Edward L. Steele and Michael C. Steele; his nieces Anne L. Steele, Susan Steele Jennings. He placed great confidence in and held great appreciation for his brother in law Edward C. Steele and his cousin Bernard B. Markey.
