While at Boys High he competed on the Varsity Track and Field Team. His events were sprints and the running broad jump. After high school he enlisted in the Army Air Force and served as a gunnery instructor during WWII. After serving in the military, he met and fell in love with Florence Squeri, also of Brooklyn. They were married on October 22, 1950 and went on to have three children: Linda, Janet and Frank. In 1954 he joined the NYPD and was part of the Accident Investigation Squad in Brooklyn until he retired in 1978. In his later years Sal enjoyed golf, doing crossword puzzles, family vacations, travelling with his wife and spending time with his grandchildren Stephen, Christine, Daniel, John and Michelle. When he could, he would be there to watch their soccer, baseball, football, lacrosse and basketball games. He would attend their concerts, dance recitals and art shows and track meets. All of which brought him great joy. He was very proud of all his children, his grandchildren and their accomplishments. He loved his sons- in- law, Francis Barbieri, Jr. DDS, Francis Fanelli and his daughter- in -law Rosemarie Dorado Misciagno. He looked forward to welcoming his future granddaughter-in-law Jenny Mata to the family in September 2013. He loved all animals, particularly dogs, horses and birds. The family dogs were always drawn to Sal and he had an obvious love and connection to Jake, Ace, Bentley, Gracie, Bella, Rusty, Copper and Java. He was a communicant at St. Barnabas R.C.
