Obituary Part 1
Inspector Justin Lenz, Commanding Officer of the Office of Professional Development joined the New York City Police Department in October 1990, after previously serving as a New York City Correction Officer on Rikers Island. He began his patrol career in the 112th Precinct in Forest Hills. He performed both uniform and plainclothes patrol until his promotion to Sergeant and assignment to the 24th Precinct on the upper west side of Manhattan. Besides patrol assignment, then Sergeant Lenz supervised the Street Narcotic Enforcement Unit for over 5 years. Upon promotion to Lieutenant, assignment followed to Transit District 1, in Manhattan. Promotion to Captain led to a return to the 24th Precinct as Executive Officer, and the Brooklyn North Narcotics to supervise drug enforcement in East New York, Brooklyn. Inspector Lenz previously commanded the 76th Precinct in Red Hook, Brooklyn. He took command of the 101st Precinct in January 2015 and from there went on to be X.O of Force Investigation from May 2017 through September 2018. He was promoted to Inspector on June 28th, 2019 – while leading the Office of Professional Development.

Inspector Lenz has served on Active Duty and as member of the New York Army National Guard for over 36 years. He entered Army service May 24, 1984 at Ft. Hamilton, New York and attended Basic and Advanced Individual Training and Airborne School at Ft. Benning, GA. Assignment then followed as an Infantry-paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division, Ft Bragg, N.C.. Inspector Lenz left active service in December 1987 and joined the New York Army National Guard. He deployed to Iraq from April 2003 through April 2004. Insp. Lenz deployed again to Iraq in August 2007. Insp. Lenz currently serves as the Sergeant Major of the 42nd Infantry Division.
Insp. Lenz holds an Associate and Bachelor degrees in Criminal Justice from The City University of New York John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice from American Military University.
Inspector Lenz resides in North Bellmore, New York and is married to the former Rita Lydon; they have two children, Erin age 26 and Michael age 24.
