Obituary
Mary Basile Wittenborg, 100, of East Meadow, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 29, 2025.
Born on January 21, 1925, in Inwood, Long Island, Mary grew up in a lively household as one of seven children. She remained close to her siblings throughout her life and was the last surviving member of her family.
Affectionately known as “Mare” to friends and family, she spent many years working at Ace Photo Lab, where she discovered a love for photography and often captured special moments with her large extended family.
In 1969, Mary married John H. Wittenborg, Jr. and settled in East Meadow, where she became a cherished member of the community for more than five decades. Following John’s passing in 1984, she worked as a secretary at Nassau University Medical Center for 18 years before retiring in her 70s.
A woman of deep faith and service, Mary joined the VFW Women’s Auxiliary in 1945 and was a devoted member of St. Raphael’s Church in East Meadow for more than 50 years.
Family was at the heart of Mary’s life. She lovingly cared for her mother until her passing at the age of 103 and was known for her exceptional cooking, often helping to prepare traditional Italian Sunday dinners that brought generations together.
This past January, Mary celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends, sharing stories and memories from a long and full life.
Mary is survived by her stepchildren, John Wittenborg III, Eileen Boughton, and James Wittenborg; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will forever cherish her memory. Mary will be laid to rest in Calverton National Cemetery alongside her late husband.
