Obituary

Salvatore Joseph Leone, born August 8th, 1939 in Manhattan to parents Joseph and Mary Leone. Brother to Johanna Haas (Julie), Bradenton, FL. and Grace Whitmore (Michael), Sugar Hill, GA. Known to all family and friends as Sal, Sammy, Sam & Pop (to his grand children). Dad was raised in Queens, NY. He attended public school, graduating from Flushing H.S. He fell in love with his childhood sweetheart, Concetta Puleo (Connie) in their teenage years, but they knew each other much earlier than that, living in the same neighborhood. Dad enlisted in the Air Force shortly after graduating, unfortunately during boot camp he was diagnosed with flat feet, which landed him back home with an honorable discharge. Once arriving back to New York, he married Connie (affectionately known by her grandchildren as Grandma Connie) on August 12th, 1961. However, that didn’t stop him from serving his country, as he began a 45 year career as a postal carrier in Bayside, Queens. His first route was driving a mail truck to and from JKF airport, afterwards he would work part-time at Waldbaums and also a floral box manufacturer, before securing his permanent mail route in Bayside, Queens.

Devoted and loving husband to Connie for over 63 years, for him family always came first. Dad was always about putting in a hard day’s work and afterwards celebrating life with fun and adventure. Dad was personable, kind, caring and one who loved his country. His work ethic was second to none. Devoted father to Joseph, (Debbie), of Farmingdale, Salvatore, (Dawn) of East Meadow and Paul (Lisa), of West Islip, grand-father to Madeline, Frankie, Vincent, Christina & Robert. He was a life-long Yankee and Giants fan. He had the caps, shirts and collectables to prove it. Christmas was his cherished holiday. He loved decorating the outside of the house with lights and holiday figures. In the spring he looked forward and took great pride in landscaping his home and planting his vegetable garden, sharing his abundant harvest with family, friends and neighbors. He loved traveling with Connie, whether it was a day trip to NYC, long weekend in PA., or an extended trip in the U.S. or Europe.
