Obituary
Anne M. Craig, 91, peacefully passed away on February 18, 2025, in the company of her loved ones. Born on February 9, 1934, one of Anne’s greatest joys and achievements was her large, close-knit family. As a mother of five and grandmother of 10, Anne was the heart of the Craig family. She remembered every birthday and anniversary and was present at every milestone moment. She had an extraordinary gift for nurturing close relationships with her loved ones.
She was born in Manhattan to Margaret and Thomas Mulroe, first-generation immigrants who cherished their Irish heritage and Catholic faith and passed those values onto their seven children. After graduating from Cathedral High School in 1952, Anne worked in administration at Metropolitan Life Insurance. A few years later, she met her future husband, John J. Craig, at a local dance. They were married in 1956 and welcomed their first child, Richard, in 1957.
In 1963, Anne and John left Manhattan for their new home in Lake Ronkonkoma on Long Island. Suburban life was a bit of an adjustment for Anne, now a stay-at-home mom who could walk a city block in a snap but did not yet have a driver’s license. Even so, she created a warm and comfortable home for her clan and nourished connections with her loved ones who lived farther away over the phone. (Her conversations with sister Margaret could have been record-breaking in length.)

In 1975, John, who was a lineman for New York Telephone, died on the job while assisting the disaster response team assigned to the Second Avenue fire. In that moment, Anne took on the role of two parents and sole provider, doing so with calm, purpose and grace. She found employment as a claims manager at the Suffolk County Carpenter’s Union, where she enjoyed working for 20 years. When she wasn’t at the office, she was with her children and taking care of her house. On Sundays, she always made time to attend mass. Throughout her life, Anne had unwavering faith, and it defined the compassionate person she was. “Say your prayers,” was the phrase she repeated most to her children and grandchildren.
After retirement, Anne devoted more time to her grandchildren, providing them with the many warm memories they have today. She also kept in touch with friends and family, by phone and also Facebook.
She is survived by her children Eileen Craig, Jeanne Craig, Patricia (Stephen) Daresta and John (Tara) Craig; and her grandchildren Allen Craig, Richard Craig, Rachel Lodato, Schyler Daresta, Jack Daresta, Kyle Kelly, Lauren Kelly, Dylan Craig and Connor Craig. She was preceded in death by her husband John Craig, her son Richard Craig and grandson John Craig.
A memorial mass for Anne will be held on March 8 at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church, at 10:30 a.m.
