Obituary

Sheila Hackett (nee Hutchings) passed away peacefully in her home on February 3, 2025, in North Merrick, NY at the age of 80 after a private battle with cancer. Sheila is survived by her husband, James (Jim) Hackett III; children, Donna of Urbana, MD, Amy (Mark) of Urbana, MD, and Robert (Elisabeth) of Pickerington, OH; grandchildren, Nina, Clive, Emma, Charlie, Colin, and Connor; siblings, Pamela (Thomas), Derek (Joan), Wendy (Patrick), and Shirley; sister-in-law, Peg; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Annie and Ashley Hicks of Westbury, England and her in-laws, James and Margaret Hackett, Jr. Sheila was born on January 20, 1945, in Westbury, England. Sheila immigrated to the United States in 1968 where she met and became roommates with her future sister-in-law, Peg, in Yonkers, NY. After moving to Yonkers, Sheila began working as au pair until she found her true calling working for Citibank in 1969. Starting as a teller, Sheila continued to work for Citibank for over 55 years at various branches while earning numerous awards and promotions, rising to the position of Vice President of Loss Prevention. She was a beloved and accomplished employee who had many friends, mentors, and mentees throughout the company.

Sheila and Jim were married for over 51 years and welcomed three children, six grandchildren, and numerous pets into their lives. Sheila and Jim have lived in their North Merrick home for over 50 years, surrounded by neighbors that grew into family. Her children remember her as a hard-working and loving mother who always made her family and friends her number one priority. She was a dedicated individual who loved a challenge and who was passionate about helping people both in her personal life and her professional life at Citibank. Over the years, she was an active and dedicated member of the PTA and often volunteered at the schools throughout the North Bellmore school district. A wake is scheduled for Thursday, February 27th from 2 – 6 pm, with memorial prayer at 5:30 pm, at Charles J. O’Shea Funeral Home (603 Wantagh Ave, Wantagh, NY 11793). All are welcome to attend and celebrate Sheila’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org) in Sheila’s memory.
