Charles S."Chuck" Gabrus, died on 1/17/25 at home in North Port, Florida. He was born in Hempstead NY in 1923 to Joseph and Teofilia Gabrus. Charles was the middle brother of Joseph and Alfred Gabrus, both deceased. As a young adult, Charles enlisted in the Army Air Corp during WWII and served as a waist gunner on a B-24. During his time in the service he met his beloved wife, Olga Doris Krapf at a small tavern in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. They were married in 1950 and moved to New York. After discharge Charles went to work for Bell Telephone on Long Island as a lineman, and worked his way up to installing business phones. He and Olga had two children; a daughter, Gayle Metzger-Hauser who is married to Steven Hauser and a son, Charles S Gabrus Jr, deceased ,who was married to Madelyn Courtney. Charles and Olga built their own home in East Meadow, NY where they lived for 53 years. Eventually Charles and Olga moved to Montgomery NY to live with their daughter Gayle. Unfortunately Olga died and Charles eventually moved to North Port, Florida to live with Gayle and her husband Steve. Those are the facts of his life. But he was more than facts and dates. He was a warm, incredibly hard-working, generous man who loved his wife and his kids and his wonderful grandkids, Jake Gabrus and Courtney Gabrus. He loved fast cars, his dog Cherry, golfing and watching Nascar and Football and could fix anything. He was courageous and patriotic, and cherished his experiences and fellow airman of the 489". He would always stand, place his hand over his heart and sing along to the "Star Bangled Banner". To many, he was one of the heroes of this country, and he was my hero. Services will be graveside at Calverton Cemetery, Calverton, NY. In his memory, donations can be made to the Collings Foundation, 568 Main St., Hudson, MA 01749 for restoration of the B-24 Liberator, or to your local animal shelter
